Canada Post—2008 IIHF World Championship Stamp
2008 was a big year in Canada, marking both Quebec’s 400th, and the International Ice Hockey Federation’s 100th anniversaries. In May 2008, the best international hockey teams in the world competed in Halifax and Quebec. Remarkably, this was the first time that the IIHF World Men’s Championship was held here in Canada.
Canada Post chose Context to design the 2008 World Championship stamp, and we wanted to make it memorable. We designed a stamp that communicated the energy and excitement of the sport along with the pride and history of the cities hosting the games.
- 2 Stamp Booklets
- 2 First Day Covers
- 2 Special Cancellation Marks (hockey player, puck)
Context created a stamp that highlighted the game through the creation of a bold, iconic design. This was a stamp that appealed to hockey fans, along with stamp collectors and comic-book lovers. In the booklets, we used photography to put the spotlight on Halifax and Quebec, featuring dramatic images of the Citadel and Le Château Frontenac.
Canada Post printed 20,000 First Day covers, 1,250,000 stamp booklets, and 20,000 First Day cover cancellations.
